Aircraft tow tractor demonstration held at Domodedovo airport

December 19, 2018

Press release

An airfield tractor built on the basis of an armored repair and recovery vehicle (BREM-1) has been shown at Domodedovo Airport for the first time. The tractor towed a long-haul IL-62 aircraft in severe weather conditions. The special version of the BREM-1 had been manufactured and supplied to Domodedovo by Uralvagonzavod research and production corporation, which is part of Rostec.

The machine is a civilian version of a military tractor based on the T-72 tank. It has been adapted for use at the airport. In emergency situations, the tractor can move an aircraft of any size. It can be used for relocation work that requires a pull force of up to 120 tons.

In addition, the tractor can create an exit path on any surface. The machine can increase the speed and efficiency of operations when aircraft roll off the runway or taxiway, as well as when there is damage to the aircraft’s chassis. Domodedovo is the first airport in Russia to acquire a civilian version of the BREM-1.

“The use of an adapted version of the BREM-1 for the evacuation and towing of aircraft of any type is a successful example of defense conversion. We are confident that the machine will give long and reliable service at Domodedovo Airport,” said Sergei Abramov, industrial director of State Corporation Rostec. “Rostec sees significant export potential for the civilian BREM-1. Given the increase in the global wide-body aircraft fleet in the next ten years, large aviation hubs will need equipment that, can quickly evacuate or tow a heavy airliner in case of emergency.”

The armored repair and recovery vehicle (BREM-1) weighs 41 tons and is equipped with a full-swing jib crane with a maximum carrying capacity of 12 tons and a loading platform to accommodate containers with tools, accessories and spare parts. In addition, the machine has electric welding equipment for cutting and welding steel.

Rostec continues to implement its large-scale Armament Cluster development program in accordance with the approved Strategy, the main objectives of which are annual growth of revenue by an average of 17% in ruble terms through 2025, as well as improved operational efficiency and access to global markets.
