Rostec to produce a civilian version of the latest Russian Udav pistol

January 24, 2019

Press release

A civilian version of the newest Russian Udav pistol complex will be produced for professional shooters participating in international-class competitions. Also the developer plans to create a civilian export version of the pistol, which will retain its power and accuracy, ergonomic design and low weight.

The self-loading 9-mm caliber Udav pistol created by State Corporation Rostec’s TSNIITOCHMASH is an entirely domestic development and is assembled from Russian components. The new pistol complex has passed state tests and has been recommended for adoption. The Udav will be made in three versions: for the armed forces, for special units and for the civilian market. The civilian version will be oriented toward the needs of professional athletic marksmen, and its tactical and technical characteristics will allow it to compete with such well-known small arms brands as Colt, Walther, Heckler & Koch, Glock, Browning, CZ and others.

“Our latest development combines the best characteristics of Russian small arms, and its design features make it a universal weapon for both military, and special assignments and civilian use. That is why the Udav will meet the high requirements of professional shooters for short-barreled weapons. Due to the use of modern composite materials, it maintains performance in a temperature range of -50 to +70 degrees C. The gun is equally suitable for the left-handed and right-handed, and the design makes it possible to visually and tactilely confirm the presence of a cartridge in the chamber. Over time, the civilian version may have quite good export prospects,” said Rostec Industrial Director Sergey Abramov.

Its magazine capacity is 18 rounds, which is 10 more than the Makarov. The gun uses the full range of 9x21mm ammunition: tracer, armor-piercing, and expanding. In addition, two new bullets have been developed specifically for the Udav pistol—subsonic and with enhanced penetration.

TSNIITOCHMASH forms part of Rostec State Corporation as a  directly managed organization. The company is a center of research and development of small arms, ammunition, training systems, combat suits and other weapons, as well as means of protection of weapons and military equipment from high-precision weapons. Products of TSNIITOCHMASH is considered to be of high quality both in the Russian power structures, and abroad. Among other products, the company has developed a set of second generation combat suits Ratnik, underwater weapon APS and SPP-1, anti-tank missile system Kornet, pistol Gyurza, assault rifle Val, rifle Vintorez, etc.
