Tunisia Enhances Naval Capabilities with $110 Million Purchase of SAFE Archangel Boats

The U.S. State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to the Tunisian government for 65-foot SAFE Archangel Boats and associated logistical and program support, estimated at $110 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has certified the notification to Congress of this possible sale today.

The Tunisian government requested the purchase of additional 65-foot SAFE Archangel Boats and non-MDE (Major Defense Equipment) items and services, which will be added to an already implemented case. The original case, valued at $49.3 million, included these same boats, as well as marine global positioning systems, navigation systems, communications equipment, training, and other logistical and program support elements.

These boats will strengthen the Tunisian Navy’s ability to conduct search and rescue operations, enforce maritime law, and ensure maritime security in the region. The 65-foot Archangel boats, manufactured by SAFE Boats International, are equipped with dual 1,600 horsepower diesel engines, capable of reaching speeds exceeding 40 knots, with a range of 400 nautical miles. They also feature shock-mitigating seating, climate control systems, and advanced thermal imaging systems, making them highly effective in low-visibility conditions.

This sale aligns with the ongoing security cooperation between the United States and Tunisia, a key non-NATO ally playing a crucial role in regional security and peacekeeping operations throughout Africa. This acquisition will not alter the military balance in the region but will contribute to regional stability and interoperability with Western partners.
